Yerma by Federico García Lorca is a powerful rural tragedy about a woman whose yearning for a child becomes an all-consuming obsession.

The play is set during the1930's, when a woman’s worth was measured by her ability to bear children; especially sons. Yet Yerma is trapped in a loveless marriage and bound by strict social expectations and her own unyielding sense of duty and the story culminates in a devastating climax.

Through poetic language and stark imagery, Lorca’s drama lays bare the suffocating pressures of tradition, the repression of desire, and the devastating consequences when a woman’s identity is bound to motherhood.

Yerma is the second part of a trilogy of plays by Lorca, with the other parts being 'Blood Wedding' and 'The House of Bernarda Alba'.  In 1936 he was murdered in Granada in mysterious circumstances, just after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
